Description We are looking for a Senior Manager - Database Engineer/Administrator with extensive experience leading teams in database design, optimization, and management to join our technology team. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of maintaining high-performance and high-availability database systems, with a focus on scalability, data integrity, and security.
This position is contingent on funding and will be located in Arlington, VA. Key Responsibilities - Design, implement, and maintain complex database systems that are efficient, reliable, and scalable
- Lead database optimization efforts by performing tuning, conducting query optimization, and implementing indexing strategies
- Oversee the installation, configuration, and upgrade of database software and related applications
- Ensure database security by implementing industry-standard encryption and access controls
- Develop and manage backup and recovery procedures to prevent data loss and to minimize downtime in the event of a disaster
- Analyze system performance and work collaboratively with IT and development teams to resolve complex issues and improve database operations
- Regularly monitor databases to proactively identify and address issues related to capacity, performance, and maintenance
- Provide leadership and guidance in the creation of standards, best practices, and procedures related to database management
- Mentor junior database administrators and act as an escalation point for complex support issues
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure cohesive integration of database technologies with other enterprise applications and systems
Qualifications EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field; Master's degree preferred; additional years of experience may be substituted in lieu of degree
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in database administration, with at least 4 years in a senior role managing enterprise databases
- Strong expertise in SQL and experience with major RDBMS like Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or MySQL
- Proficient in database replication, high availability, and disaster recovery solutions
- Knowledge of NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Cassandra, etc.) is a plus
- Familiarity with cloud-based database services (AWS RDS, Azure SQL Database, Google Cloud SQL) is highly desirable
- Experience with database monitoring tools and ability to interpret their results for actionable insights
- Solid understanding of database-related networking and security protocols
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
CLEARANCE REQUIREMENT: - Must have an active Secret clearance
- Ability to obtain a Top Secret clearance
Work Environment: - This position may require on-call availability and occasional overtime
- Participation in disaster recovery drills and activities
- Some travel may be required for the purpose of off-site system maintenance and troubleshooting
